# About User References

User references point to the _User_ object. Although _User_ is not an object like _Product_ or _Study_, Vault allows Admins to create special object fields that reference _User_ object. When selecting from these fields, you see all active users in the Vault. Domain users who are not part of the current Vault don't appear in the selection menu.

Unlike a reference field that points to a true object, these fields do not create a relationship between the selected user and the object record.

## Suggested Uses for User Reference Field

These are some suggested ways to employ user reference fields in your own Vault:

* Add a _Coordinator_ field to the _Study Site_ object and use it to track which user is responsible for coordinating site documents.
* Use a _Manager_ field on the _Marketing Campaign_ object to keep a record of the user who managed the campaign.
